Chapter Eighteen

Wilson drove the car into the short stay parking lot, dutifully taking a ticket and parking as close to the terminal as he could. It wasn’t exactly the best place to keep the car for a fast getaway, but they couldn’t risk parking at the terminal and having the car towed. Melissa wasn’t worried about their location. There were two ways this would end. One involved walking out with Shania and driving away as if nothing had happened. The other involved police, handcuffs and more flashing lights.

Wilson looked more nervous than she was, and she was crapping herself. Armed police were everywhere. But, she realized, they weren’t Richmond P.D. They were Federal officers. Melissa knew that Tim had encountered a pair of FBI agents who were in league with Granger, but that couldn’t be true of the majority of Federal officers, could it? Granger had warned her she wouldn’t be allowed to leave the country, and it was likely she was on a watch list. Still, if she didn’t actually head through security, would they be looking for her? Was Shania already in custody somewhere in the terminal?

Again, it didn’t matter what happened to Melissa. She needed to know Shania was safe and there was only one way to do that.

Once inside the doors they headed to the second level for departures. Melissa hoped Shania hadn’t passed through security yet. Wilson tapped her on her arm and waved his phone at her. At first she didn’t realize what he meant, but then she glanced at her own phone to see a welcome screen and an acceptance of terms and conditions button.

“Wi-Fi!” she said.

Wilson put his finger to his lips and the two of them sat down on a bench opposite the ticket counters.

Melissa’s phone came to life as soon as she pressed the accept button. She couldn’t send or receive texts or make calls, but she could get email and her IM was buzzing with notifications. She scrolled through the messages from Jasmine, from her dad, from random men sending her pictures of their junk. There was Shania. An hour ago she had sent a simple message.

Where are you?

She messaged back.

We’re at the airport. Where are you?

She waited for the response, tapping her finger against the side of her phone. Wilson was scrolling through his own phone, clearly with a lot to catch up on also.

Finally the little bouncy symbol appeared to show that Shania was typing.

At the bar. Where have you been?

Melissa tapped Wilson on the shoulder and they stood up. She followed the signs that showed an image of a knife and fork, past the ticket counters and through a wide corridor leading to the security checkpoints and terminals. The deeper they moved into the terminal, the more apprehension she felt. She was sweating slightly despite the reasonable temperature in the building. Her eyes darted this way and that, searching out cops as she tried to assess their likelihood of advancing on her and Wilson. Her stomach was churning and she realized she was in urgent need of the washroom.
